Release - Norwich Marathon 2008
|
The
Whitlingham Broad and River Yare was the venue for the first National selection
race in this years Canoe Marathon calendar. This was
the first of a series of events over which this years national team will be
picked for marathon canoeing.
The junior selection race includes boys up to the age of 18. There are no
sub-divisions into lower age groups. This makes the results from
Norwich CC's two 14-year olds all the more commendable and demonstrates that
they will be a force to be dealt with in the future. Oliver Rix
finished in 9th position and Albert Hicks in 11th, outstanding results from
these two young lads. They raced over a 12 mile course which
started on the Broad outside the outdoor education centre, took in 2 laps of the
broad and 2 laps of a river course and 2 long portages from
the broad into the river and vice versa. Winner of the event was Tom Sharpe who
had travelled up from Exeter to contest with paddlers from
all over the country.
Albert and Oliver will be racing together in the next junior selection race at
Bedford on 27th April where they will compete in the doubles
event (K2).
Lewis Allen (17) also of Norwich canoe club was first home from the home club
and finished in 7th place.
At the Eastern Region inter-club, Norwich Hasler event, Norwich Canoe Club
youngsters competed in the Lightning event. (Lightning's are a
class of boat used by U-12 and U-10 for racing.)
Top performances came from Joe Rix who finished 3rd in the U-12 boys and Ryan
Ellis who was also 3rd in U-10 boys.
Other placings were
U-12 boys Matthew Hayward
7th
U-10 boys Daniel Sanders

Dean Terry
7th
U-12 girls Lucy Lee-Smith
4th
Emily Nelson 8th
In the Div 9 event, which is open to all ages' men and women, 13 year old Hannah
Lake from Norwich had an outstanding race to finish in 5th
place.
Becky Wins Senior Ladies Selection Race
Delighted Norwich Canoe Club members cheered Becky Schofield in after a
gruelling 24k leading the field in by over 2 mins. Becky who recently
won the Gent international marathon must now be a very strong contender for this
year's national team following her convincing performance on
Sunday. Supermum Becky from Trowse, combines training and racing with looking
after daughter, Abby, and working as a physiotherapist.
In the Senior Men's race, last year's junior European champion, Tim Pendle from
Norwich, proved that he can hold his own amongst the senior
men and raced with the leading group throughout the 27k event and finished a
very close 4th place, a performance which undoubtedly got him
noticed with the British Team Selectors.
