Tim
wins European Championship
Tim
Pendle of Norwich Canoe club competed in the junior European Canoe Marathon Championship
on Saturday 14th July at Trenchin in Slovakia.
Over
20 contestants competed over a course of 15 miles with 5 portages (get out of
your boat and run and then back into the boat again) in temperatures way above
what we have experienced in Norfolk this summer.
Tim
had a very good start and got away with a group of 5 from the off, 2 Italians, a
Hungarian and a Belge. He raced a very controlled race and made his tactical
move at the last portage where his running ability allowed him to create a substantial
lead from which none of the others contestants were able to recover. Delighted
staff and other members of the British team (including father and coach Dyson
Pendle) cheered him into the finish.
It
was a double celebration for Tim over the weekend as he celebrated his 18th
birthday on Sunday.....certainly a weekend never to forget!!
It
is a first for Norwich Canoe Club to have a European champion and reflects the
hard work the club has put into development over the past few years. Last year
the club ranked 4th in the country in marathon racing and is looking to improve
this again by the end of the season.
Tim,
a trainee builder working for his father, lives in Trowse, very close to Norwich
Canoe Club where he trains at least 10 times a week both on and off the water.
