Seems
like its not just football that Norwich are excelling at
recently. Norwich marathon racing canoeists were in action at
the weekend in 2 events on the River Ouse at Bedford. These were
an Eastern Region Hasler competition, where clubs from all over
the east of England compete against each-other in ability
classes, and this year’s first National Selection Race for
entry into the National Team.
Norwich’s
Tim Pendle won an aggressive senior men’s race, finishing with
minutes separating him from a closely fought 2nd and
3rd place of John Sawyers (Elmbridge), and Mark Childerstone (Wey). Tim was delighted with
his performance which will have earned him the K1 (singles) slot
in the national marathon team and will ensure his competition in
international events in the coming season. Club mate Ben
Bradshaw also impressed the selectors and had an excellent race
to finish in 5th place.

In
the junior boy’s event, another hotly contested competition,
Norwich’s Albert Hicks, proved that his recent strong
performance in Gent was no fluke, and battled his way to a very
creditable 3rd spot.
Club
coach Dyson Pendle also entered 2 younger junior club members
into the selection races as preparation and development for them
for the following years. Ashley Nobbs put in a fine performance
in the boys event to finish 16th and Stacy Terry showed her
potential for the future with a strong 9th place.
Norwich
fielded a strong team in the Hasler competition, despite their
strongest members being involved in the selection race, and
proved the depth and strength throughout the club to win the
day’s competition. Winning performances from Rob Kilbourn,
Dyson Pendle, Martin Hancy, James Last, Dean Grady, George Mace,
Julie Hicks and Rob Wiley ensured that Norwich stay at the top
of the Eastern Region League with only 2 more events to go. The
next event will be on home water, the Norwich Hasler takes place
at The Whitlingham Broad on May 23rd and if Norwich can dominate
here then they will be an almost unbeatable position in the race
for Eastern Region Champions.
