Press Release - Gudena Marathon 2009
Victory at Gudena

Oli Rix, a year 11 student at Framingham Earl High School had an outstanding victory in the International Tour of Gudena Canoe Race in Denmark.  This event which is held in the “Lake District” area of northern Denmark is notoriously arduous, a 3-stage 56 km marathon over a series of rivers and lakes. Oli, a member of Norwich Canoe Club, was selected for this event following strong performances at a series of national selection races and further surprised everyone by raising his game to dominate this event.

Oli broke away with two Danish lads on the first 26k stage and won the sprint finish to lead at the end of day 1.  Norwich canoe club team mate Albert Hicks, also representing Great Britain finished in the chasing group. The following morning’s first stage saw Oli and Albert break away together, establishing a growing lead for Oli and gaining places in the overall standing for Albert. They worked together over the closing kilometres to secure a fantastic win for Oli and a well deserved 4th place for Albert.

Oli is very grateful to Beth Coley and South Norfolk District Council who awarded him with a Community Sports Achiever Award earlier this year and have encouraged him with his training through-out the season. He has also attended a series of sessions on the Junior Athlete Education Program at Framingham Earl High School which has helped him a lot too.

Norwich canoe club’s head coach, Dyson Pendle, was delighted with the boy’s results and will soon have them down to serious winter training along with a growing group of promising young athletes at the club.

This includes former Junior European Champion, Tim Pendle now paddling in the senior category, who is just back from the World Championships in Portugal where, despite having a last minute change of partner in the doubles kayak event, went on to secure 10th place in the world in a very tough and exciting race.
